We are looking forward to Phoenix Rising FC Co-owner and Captain Didier Drogba's return to Phoenix in the next two weeks following surgery in London for a minor groin injury. We also send our gratitude to Chelsea FC for assisting with Didier's rehabilitation and preparing him for our final push toward the USL playoffs.
In additional roster news, Omar Bravo is currently not on Phoenix Rising FC's active roster, but he is training with the club. Mr. Bravo spoke with head coach Patrice Carteron about a possible move from Phoenix but has since decided to remain with the team and continue training with his teammates. His breadth of international soccer experience is still very much valued, and Mr. Bravo enjoys being a mentor for our younger players. By agreeing to become an inactive player, Mr. Bravo gives the team an extra international roster spot.
The club used that roster spot to sign playmaking midfielder Gladson Awako.
Twenty-six year-old Awako comes to Phoenix Rising FC after a five-year stint with TP Mazembe of the Congolese first division. During his time with the African club, TP Mazembe won four league titles and one African Champions League title. The Champions League triumph, and three of the league trophies were won while Patrice Carteron, current Phoenix Rising FC head coach, was manager at TP Mazembe.
A native of Ghana, Awako was a member of his country’s U-20 national team, and earned one senior international cap in 2009. Awako previously played on trial with European giants Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur.
Prior to his move to TP Mazembe, Awako starred with Ghanaian clubs Heart of Lions and Real Sportive. In 71 combined appearances with the two teams, Awako scored 22 goals.
With the signing of Awako, Phoenix Rising FC has 27 players on its active roster. He will be available for selection to Wednesday's squad.
