PHOENIX (February 1, 2019) — Phoenix Rising FC is set to play its first preseason match of the year tomorrow when it kicks off against MLS side Minnesota United in the opener of the 2019 Mobile Mini Sun Cup in Tucson, Ariz. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will be live streamed via YouTube. Fans making the trip south can purchase tickets on FCTucson.com or buy their tickets at the Kino Sports Complex box office.
This match will be the first with head coach Rick Schantz manning the sidelines following the announcement that he would become the full-time head coach for the 2019 season. Last season, he took over head coaching duties on an interim basis on June 10th and led the club to a third-place regular season finish and a Western Conference Championship before falling in the USL Cup Final to Louisville City FC. During that stretch, Schantz went 15-7-2.
Phoenix Rising returns 13 players from that Western Conference Championship team in addition to the six new players the club signed in the offseason. The 20-man roster is rounded out by recent addition, Phoenix Rising Youth goalkeeper Brandon Keniston.
This will be the first time Phoenix Rising squares up with Minnesota United and the eighth time it has played an MLS team. Of the seven previous matches, six were friendlies and one was a U.S. Open Cup match. Rising won its last match against an MLS team, a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls in its final match of the 2018 Mobile Mini Sun Cup.
The match will also be the earliest in a calendar year that Phoenix Rising has played a match. The previous record was set last season when the club began its preseason with a friendly against the New York Red Bulls on February 10th.
