OAKLAND, California (Wednesday, July 27) – Phoenix Rising FC earned a point in a 0-0 draw with Oakland Roots SC on the road tonight at Laney Stadium.
Rising’s defense has now put together a shutout streak of 275 consecutive minutes heading into this weekend’s match against Colorado Springs this Saturday, July 30 (7:30 p.m.) at Wild Horse Pass.
Tonight, Darnell King nearly put Rising ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute when he got forward up the left side and served a ball in to the feet of Koze Donasiyano. The midfielder arrived at the perfect time and hit the ball with his first touch but was unable to keep his attempt on frame.
Joey Calistri and Greg Hurst linked up in the 18th minute. This time it was Phoenix’s right back that came forward and won a loose ball before playing a pass backwards to the top of the area for Hurst to hit with his first touch. The right-footed curling shot narrowly missed connecting with the top right corner of the goal behind Roots goalkeeper Taylor Bailey.
On the opposite end of the pitch, Rising’s shutout streak swelled to 195 consecutive minutes by the 20th minute of the match thanks in part to goalkeeper Ben Lundt, who made three saves by that point.
Santi Moar won a loose ball following a free kick and put Luis Seijas in on goal in the 81st minute. Unfortunately, Seijas hurried his shot and sent it inches over the crossbar from the center of the area.
King sent in another dangerous cross that found the head of Joe Farrell in the 86th minute. The center back tried to slip a shot inside the back post, but his attempt also missed the woodwork by a few inches.
Lundt finished the evening with seven saves to earn his sixth clean sheet of the season.

General thoughts on the match…
Our game plan was good and our guys executed it well, except in the final third. We lacked a bit of quality in transition. We made a few poor decisions, but overall, I’m pleased with the guys. Three games eight days with 270 minutes of shutouts. The commitment is there. The work rate is there.
The execution of the game plan against a difficult 3-4-2-1… They bring their 10’s inside they hit the ball to their wingbacks. Darnell King was very good tonight. He played a great game against Rito. I could say so many good things about our players tonight.
